ReplyDeletei saw something in the Times Magazine today about young debutantes in the townships in Cape Town and their 'matric' balls and how it's a really big deal for the community for them to be presented well. and there's a really interesting cross-cultural mix in what they end up wearing because most of them design their own outfits and they usually reference american pop/hip hop stars but still try to keep elements of their 'south-african-ness'.
also these matric/prom balls used to be exclusive to the white students because of apartheid but now the fact that the non-white students can participate it's become more an expression of freedom...
